Hey, would you look at that? My first blog post.
I’ll consider it a symbolic gesture that I dedicate the first to the first of the new year. Unfortunately, it never feels apropo to celebrate “new” beginnings nowadays. When the country feels like it’s on the brink of collapse, it puts a lot of things into perspective for me.
I know that the government has a long history of failing its people, time and time again. In the midst of the ongoing Los Angeles fires, a concerning resurgence of H5N1 avian flu (which has now confirmed 1 death), the drastic acceleration of imperialism-fueled climate change breaching the 1.5º C limit, and of course the continued ongoing genocide in Gaza, perpetrated by the settler-colonial state of Israel, funded and sanctioned entirely by the Western world - what does our government focus on?
Bills banning transgender athletes from sports, clamping down on a social media app that they deem a “national security threat” (not to mention all the times confidential military documents have been leaked on forums like War Thunder, but sure). A renewed invigoration by the leeches and lowlifes running so-called “ICE” and “CBP” to conduct raids in different areas of California, targeting undocumented workers and tearing apart families. An ever more militarized police force murdering with impunity and upholding the sanctity of private property over all life.
Make no mistake: fascism isn’t on the rise, it has been here all along. It has bid its time and has put all its affairs in order. I’m all too aware of how this will play out, and anyone who has not willingly buried their head in the sand can easily say the same. Marginalized people of all walks of life saw this long before any Democrat would willingly utter it.
Happy New Years, but don’t come to me asking for my resolution; you should already know my answer. We have so much work to do.
